Breakell Racing showed superb pace with Reece Somerfield as they continued their Porsche Sprint Challenge GB campaign at Donington Park this past weekend (26/27 August).
With confidence high following the team’s maiden Porsche podiums last time out at Croft, Somerfield was targeting more success at Donington Park. He immediately set a strong pace on the full Grand Prix layout, finishing second in class during free practice on Thursday.
While it unfortunately proved to be a tougher qualifying session than hoped in his Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, Somerfield hit back with a brilliant first race. Immediately gaining two places on the opening lap to settle into fourth in class, he showcased his ever-improving speed in the car as he battled in the top six throughout the race.
The former Ginetta race-winner’s best drive of the weekend came in race two. From the back of the grid, he produced a stunning charge through the order. Scything his way through the field, he got into the top six before an opportunistic move into the last corner on the final lap netted him two more places to fourth.
The final race proved to be a chaotic one, with Somerfield staying out of trouble in early stages as others clashed or slid off circuit. Climbing to a phenomenal fifth overall and second in class, he was on course for his best result of the year when an unfair move from another driver sent him spinning into the gravel and out of the race.
James Breakell: “Without a doubt this has been Reece’s strongest weekend all round in the championship and it’s been a clear showcase as to the great progress he’s made in the Cayman. To be up there running in the top six overall is a brilliant achievement.
“It’s a shame that the final results on paper didn’t match the speed and racecraft that Reece produced over the weekend, but we’re immensely proud of the performances he produced. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll be back up there on the podium in the coming races.”
