Breakell Racing Secure Brilliant First Ginetta Championship Title

Breakell Racing have sensationally secured championship glory in only their second year in Ginetta racing, with Wes Pearce completing his brilliant Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 SuperCup season with the G56 Am title.

Front-runners throughout their debut campaign in the series last year, the Lancashire team expanded their presence in the British Touring Car Championship support series for 2022 and ended the campaign with a brilliant total of seven class wins and 26 podium finishes.

The season came to an end around the world-famous Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit earlier this month (08/09 October), with the team’s driving duo of Pearce and Reece Somerfield both producing excellent performances across the final three races.

Pearce headed into the event with the destiny of the title in his hands, and he duly delivered in the opening race on Saturday as a brilliant class victory gave him an unassailable lead with two races to spare. With the pressure off, he went on to add a pair of second place finishes in the final outings.

Those results signed off a phenomenal first season in top-level GT racing for the Surrey driver, who finished 19 of the 20 races on the class podium. That consistency was made possible by him being the only driver in the championship to finish every race this year.

Somerfield meanwhile made history as the only driver to compete in the first and last races in the GT4 SuperCup, with the series being cancelled for 2023. The Ginetta stalwart brought his 11th consecutive Ginetta campaign to an end with a pair of podium finishes.

A stunning drive from seventh on the grid to third in the opening race was followed by another third place result in race two, meaning Somerfield had picked up silverware in five consecutive races prior to an unfortunate incident in the last race.

James Breakell: “I’m incredibly proud of the team and everything we have achieved this season. Wes and Reece have proven themselves as great drivers across the campaign and richly deserve all the success they have achieved.

“Wes have driven so smartly this year, staying out of trouble and picking up podium finishes in all bar one race. It’s a testament to the team also that we suffered no DNF’s this season, the only driver to do so.

“Reece has had some tough moments this year, but he showed his class with that run of five podiums in a row to end the season. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone in the team who have worked so hard on the cars this year. To engineer two cars to be reliable finishers at a competitive level is thanks to their skill and dedication.”

Wes Pearce: “It’s been a very good year. Consistency has paid off for us; we finished every race, kept taking home podiums and picked up the wins where we could. The team have done a great job this year, we got the car late and it’s been a huge learning curve for us all, and it’s been such good fun racing together.”
