Breakell Racing are set for one of their busiest race seasons to date in 2021, with an exciting expansion into Ginetta racing alongside their existing championship-winning programme in the Sports Prototype Cup.
The Lancashire based team were crowned champions in the Sports Prototype Cup last year and return to the grid with Revolution and Radical machinery, whilst they will mount a challenge in both the Ginetta Junior Championship and GT5 Challenge.
Sports Prototype Cup
Breakell Racing return for another season in the Sports Prototype Cup following an incredible 2020 campaign. In the inaugural season of the series, they scored no less than four race wins and 12 podium finishes, as well as guiding Le Mans 24 Hours racer Alex Kapadia to the title.
The team have one driver confirmed for the season so far, with Richard Wells returning to pilot one of the 2021 specification Revolution A-Ones; a carbon-fibre high-downforce prototype with over 500bhp/tonne. Wells impressed last year with three podium finishes in the second half of the season.
Breakell Racing have a number of open opportunities for drivers to join him in the championship this season, with Revolution A-One’s available for arrive and drive hire, and also for sale with support packages from the team.
There are also Radical SR3’s available for hire, which are eligible for the championship’s SR3 Trophy and Radical Challenge classes, with all drivers benefiting from expert coaching from Kapadia and fellow 2020 race-winner Morten Dons.
The highlight of the 2020 season meanwhile was competing on the support bill of the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao, and the championship is returning to the Formula 1 package once again this year to race at Monza in Italy.
One of the most iconic circuits in the world, Monza’s combination of fast, flowing corners and challenging chicanes means it’s renowned as a true drivers’ track. The passionate ‘tifosi’ crowd ensure a truly special atmosphere to race in too, making it an unmissable event to compete in.

Ginetta Juniors and GT5 Challenge
An exciting move for the 2021 season has seen Breakell Racing join Ginetta’s successful ladder of domestic one-make championships for the first time, entering both the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship and Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge.
Competing in those championships will place Breakell Racing on the two highest profile race packages in the UK, as they compete alongside the British Touring Car Championship and British GT Championship, with large trackside crowds (pending COVID restrictions) and live television coverage.
The Ginetta Junior Championship is the UK’s longest running and most prestigious Junior series, offering the first step on the motorsport ladder for 14-17 year olds. Drivers to have graduated from the series include current Formula 1 star Lando Norris and W Series champion Jamie Chadwick.
Breakell Racing are entering a single car in the championship this year for teenage talent Aqil Alibhai. The 14 year old from South Africa has a great karting pedigree from UK, European and South African competition, and has impressed the team with his pace during pre-season testing.
Alongside their race exploits in the Juniors, Breakell Racing will also be working with other young racers through the year with bespoke driver development programmes. A combination of simulator work and selected test days will prepare them to start racing in 2022.
The Ginetta GT5 Challenge meanwhile has become renowned for producing packed grids and some of the most exhilarating one-make racing in the UK. Breakell Racing have entered one car for the championship, which will be shared by multiple drivers across the campaign.
First behind the wheel for the season opener this weekend (8/9 May) will be Max Coates, who currently works with the team as a driver coach. The Yorkshireman has competed in many of the biggest championships in the UK and returns to racing a Ginetta for the first time in seven years.
The team’s prototype driver coach Morten Dons will also be back behind the wheel of a Ginetta, having been a former champion in the GT5 Challenge Sweden. He’ll be joined by fellow Danish driver Silas Rytter, who is a young protégé in his STEP Sports Management stable.
Completing the team’s line-up this season will be Ginetta debutant Sean Peters. The Lancashire racer has been part of the Breakell family in recent years competing in the 750 Motor Club Bikesports series in a Radical, having previously been successful in MG racing.
James Breakell - Team Principal:
“Everyone at Breakell Racing is incredibly excited about our plans for the 2021 season. Following a fantastic inaugural season of the Sports Prototype Cup, it was a no brainer to return to the grid this season and aim to challenge for some more silverware.
“Richard [Wells] was brilliant last season and we’re really pleased to have him back with us again. We have some great opportunities for drivers to join him on the grid this year, with the Revolution A-One and Radical SR3 both providing a special driving experience.
“The transition for our team into the Ginetta paddock has been a couple of years in the making. Our strategy is to give talented young drivers a route through motorsport into prototype racing, and these Ginetta championships give an ideal starting point on our ladder.
“Being the new kids on the block, we are focused on achieving a strong competitive year. Aqil [Alibhai] is a top young prospect in the Juniors and has really impressed in testing so far, while we have a great group of drivers lined up for the GT5 Challenge seat.
“It’s felt like a long wait over the winter to get racing again, so we can’t wait to kick off the season this weekend at Thruxton and race live on ITV4 for the first time on Sunday. With events at Brands Hatch and Silverstone to follow this month, it’s going to be a busy but exciting start to the year.”
